I was watching inconvenient truth the other day and theres the bit where it shows the sea level rising really high and flooding most of the world. Well i live near the sea, and don’t want to drown, so i got to thinking. Maybe if we lower the sea level a bit, when the water level rises then it won’t rise high enough to flood. Anyway, heres the plan. Everyone who can should take a bucket of sea water and pour it down the sink. If lots of people put the effort in, we could lower the sea level substantially and create a better world for our children to live

GREAT!!
We watched an amazing video for our Psychology class today which was Secret of the Mind.
Is what we see is actually what we see?
To those of us with functional eyes, seeing things is so natural that we never cease for a moment to appreciate the remarkable complexities of the brain. Vision, as it happen to be is processed at about 30 parts in the brain.
It is exciting that the vision serves more than identifying object. Vision is also the key that helps us to find our way around. It is found that we have separate paths that our visual sensory being processed.
Interesting Part
There was this case where someone had an accident which damaged the visual path.
The curious part is that, he identifies his parents as someone resembling his parents but they are actually imposters. He remembers as his house being something that resembles his house but not actually his house.
What had gone wrong until he could not recognize his parents?
It seems that, the confusion occurred because the nerves path that connects to the Amygdala was disconnected. Amygdala is the center that plays a key role in emotions. Hence, the visual sensory that was sent could not be supplied to the amygdala to evoke the appropriate emotional response. The lack of emotional response associated with visual sensory confuses him.
Hence, it is interesting to know that the memory we store is associated with our feelings. Hence, when we meet someone significant to us, it evokes the appropriate emotions like love, anger and fear.
Conclusion
There are other awesome videos as well. To conclude, vision does more than just seeing. We perceive depth, we avoid danger, we move around, we find our ways, we recognize people and objects.
The brain never cease to amaze me. It is really interesting to find out how the brain works and how it is organized.
It is really an odd question to ask and the impulsive answer would be : “OF COURSE NOT”. But I believe that I am smarter than him.
Background
The thought occurred to me when someone asked me to start anew in US. Sure. It sounds reasonable but yet, it seems so fallacious to me
Example 1
When I learnt programming, for the first time, it took me longer to finish and looked messier. The second attempt was much better than the first. Even though I did the same things. Technically, I started “anew”. What made me do it faster? I had prior experience and knowledge. It helped me to achieve something better.
Example 2
My friend had a huge fight with his friend. They were sort of ok afterwards yet they felt more distance. In this case, they tried to start “anew” by putting their misunderstanding aside but somehow, their prior knowledge and experience gets in the way. They are wary about each other and more careful with each other then they otherwise would have.
Theory
So, I believe that we always use what we have learned to embrace the future. I am not starting anew in US but merely giving a better fight then I otherwise would have. The parameters have changed but the equation is the same. Since the equation had been formed based on my past experience, I save the trouble of inventing the wheel myself.
One may say, what if the equation was wrong? If it was wrong, the only reason you found out because you made the same mistake twice. With one result there could be endless reasons. But with two same results, we see a pattern and that will guide us to find our erroneous path. This simply proves my point that prior knowledge and experience helps.
Conclusion
I believe I am smarter than Einstein simply because of my prior knowledge. Einstein died on 1955 and the world has progressed so much from that point thanks to him. Hence, what he invented and found out can now be replicated and be refined. So our knowledge is much better than his in that sense. We now, know more and better if we consider the society as a whole.
To better illustrate this. Think that Einstein had run 50 miles in his race. And during the 54 years after he passed away, from the point where he reached, we have run an additional 25 miles. We have not run far but we are now at the 75 miles marker. Technically, we have covered more distance than he did.
Therefore, I may not be a genius, but I am definitely smarter than him.
Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) Principle of Elimination states that “If you eliminate all the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, is nothing but the truth”
What can we learn from this?
Whether we realize or not, we are employing these principle everyday. It may be simply be shopping or as hard as making crucial decisions. It is basic enough to be taught at school. Before attempting any question (MCQ) typically, cross out those which are definitely wrong. Something so basic and yet we have a tendency to overlook or completely forget about it.
How can this be useful?
Sometimes, we find ourselves in a predicament or a taxing problem going through possible solution. Sometimes, our solutions are just too creative that they are just not practical. Again, we can always cross out solutions which are not practical or in other terms eliminate the impossible.
Sometimes, we find ourselves on the fence that we simply can’t seem to decide. Again it may be that you cannot decide whether someone is your friend or not? To simplify this example, I will use ‘he’ instead of that person. You know him a bit too well for you to regard him as a stranger so cross that out. He has betrayed your trust and hurt you enough to hate him and yet you hesitate. You can’t seem to regard him as your friend because you can no longer trust him or like him. Considering him as a foe is a bit too extreme (almost impossible) , and to treat him as a stranger is an impossible. That leaves you to treat that person as a friend which you have doubts. Ignoring all other circumstances and explanations, what seems to be a viable decision here?
Based on the Principle of Elimination, it is clear, even though highly improbable that you should be friends because that seems to be what you want. (This is merely an example so this may not be exactly your train of thoughts).
Any risk?
Yes, there is a risk that you might wrongly eliminate an option. Again, to the organized mind, all the options are neatly arranged and well presented. To the otherwise, actually writing down the options would be a better choice. Before eliminating, it is crucial that you weigh every possible scenario. Again, it is not something that could be achieved overnight but it is not impossible either.
Conclusion
Decision making is not so hard it is just a matter of willingness. Sometimes, we are just reluctant to make a decision because our feelings gets in the way. In so many times, this principle had helped me to make tough decisions, no matter how distasteful they can be. However no decisions can be constant since the world changes everyday and so does the premises upon which our decisions are crafted upon. What appears to be a good decision today may not be so tomorrow. Again, being detached is one quality that helps a lot.
Locard's principle of exchange states that "with contact between two items, there will be an exchange". Even though it was meant more to crime scene investigation and forensic science, I believe there is more to it.
What can this principle possible teach us?
When we touch something, we feels something, we use something, we smell something, we leave traces of us behind. These traces are not only, mark of out presence, but our character and personality. To know someone is to know his or her belongings or method. It may be a simple, nail clip or it could be a personal laptop, but it never fails tell us the story about the owner. A cluttered desktop, an organized desktop or a default laptop, all tells a tale about one.
So what can we do with it?
Again, to an organized mind, the excessive data spillage could categorized and grouped and be the basis of theory as to one’s character. What kind of person someone is? To a businessman, an opportunity to make money, to a spouse, make life better for both, for parents, better educate children and so on. Again, it is tempting to cry out it is not fair and causes discomfort. Why must it be unfair? It is merely making deductions based on observation. Whether we like it or not, we are observing the world, trying to figure what mechanism drives the world.
How to make the observation and deduction?
There are not methods which I can indulge you with. There are a few things which I have learned. The base of all deduction is simply observation. What does a scratched phone implies? Carelessness - The habit of not taking care of something valuable. Then here we can make another deduction. Because of this, could be someone who is insensitive to the feelings of people around him/her. From here another deduction. Could be a lonely person. However, by doing so, we run the risk of overlooking certain aspects and disregard certain explanation. The assumption that the person is insensitive has a potential to be fallacious since that may not be the only explanation. Perhaps that person does not care smaller things but rather someone who sees the bigger picture. Again, it is all a matter of how do we see things and what our standards are based upon.
The second criteria of is that we must discard all feelings and personal affection in doing so to be more objective. Feelings, have a tendency to mitigate or exaggerate. Hence, careful analysis and deduction must be done without getting too personal. It is a bit tricky in being detached but developing that ability helps.
I am not the master of analyzing people nor do I do it all the time. This piece of information seems to be amusing and intriguing enough for me to pen down.
